Fifteen

My anger was still at a boiling point when I woke up the next morning. It really affected my sleep, and I found that I kept tossing and turning, doing my best not to wake Ava or Tess despite my rage. By the time the sun came up, I knew it was time to give both sides a lesson they wouldn’t soon forget.

To do that, it was imperative that I got moving before they did. I had my army in place right at dawn, so that I wouldn’t need to worry about positioning them when the time was right. Oleppo was surprisingly empty as we ate a quick breakfast, and once that was over, we set out on our horses to rendezvous with Manuel.

Before that though, I had Jade give me a report of the Illythian side.

“They just pulled out of their camp fifteen minutes ago,” she said. “By my math, they’ll reach the entrance of the pass in another fifteen.”

“Good, let them get to the appointed place,” I said. “Who is leading them?”

She smirked at me. “None other than Garsas himself. Not exactly a surprise, is it?”

I grimaced. “Not at all. Get word to the men that I’ll be there shortly. Let me go collect the Manzanan King.”

Jade took off on her horse, making for the mountains to the east. As for me, I went due north, with Tess, Ava, Rosa, and Theo behind me as we made for the city of Marquesa.

Once arriving there, we found Manuel and his two sons already waiting for us outside the south gate. Together, they had about fifty mounted warriors. With it being this early in the morning, the king didn’t look very pleased.

“I don’t know how they do things in Essalin, but in Manzano, we typically don’t demand surprise meetings with no notice,” he grunted at me once the two sides came together. “It is unbecoming of a king to have to bow to the whims of another, wouldn’t you agree?”

“I don’t know what this is for, but it’s a waste of time!” snapped Matteo, pointing to the north. “My scouts tell me that a large force has left the Illythian camp. And that they are moving to the east. Now would be a great time for us to launch an attack!”

“There will be no fighting today,” I said. “And I can tell you the reason for the departure of the Illythian force. Rather, I’ll show you instead. Follow me.”

I didn’t have to do much coaxing to get them to come with me, sprinting with their horses across the hilly plain as they followed my group. Manuel caught up with me eventually, with him taking one side while Matteo took the other.

“What do you know of the Illythian movements?” he demanded.

“And why aren’t you sharing this information with us?” added Matteo. “Riding with you is wasting our time when we could be formulating a response to it.”

“Like I said already, there will be no fighting today,” I told them. “My goal to end this war hasn’t changed.
